is your child ill?

  • Allergies & Hives

    • Seasonal allergies (or hay fever) often presents in the spring with symptoms such as persistent runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes. Sometimes a daily nasal spray or daily non-drowsy antihistamine (Claritin or Zyrtec) can help. Please talk with your doctor to see if your child might benefit from one of these medications.
    • Food or medication allergies can present at any time after a recent exposure to a food or medication. If your child has an allergic response, please review any new medications or foods the child has recently had within the past 24 hours. If your child is having swelling of their lips or tongue or difficulty breathing they need to be seen by a doctor immediately.
    • Hives are a symptom of an allergic response. They are usually itchy, red welts on the body. Hives can be due to many causes including foods or medicines, viruses (the common cold), insect bites, environmental exposures (dust, pollen, animal dander), contact with plants, new clothes, detergents or even some metals in jewelry, and sometimes for a reason we don’t know.
    • What to do:
      • Stop any medications or foods that may be a trigger. Avoid any environmental exposures that may be the trigger of the hives (pollen, cats or dogs, etc). You can try giving your child a cool bath or putting an ice cube on localized areas of hives to help with itching.

      • Benadryl® (diphenhydramine) is used for hives and to reduce the itchiness associated with rashes such as with eczema or poison ivy.

Benadryl® can be given every 6-8 hours as needed. Most children become sleepy after taking Benadryl®. However, occasionally, a few children have the opposite response and get “hyper” with Benadryl®. A test dose during the day is advised.
